What is the importance of preserving a cultural heritage in the face of increasingly-complex world issues that pit economic advancement against Nature, traditional values, and community wellbeing?
Join the performing company of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center in Austin for our 19th original, bilingual theater performance that brings light to important Puerto Rican history and current events that are not well-known outside of the island.
Written by Tekina-eiru Maynard, Valiente Soy brings to life the fictional tale of two friends from Austin who feel called to return to the island to help in efforts to preserve the cultural heritage of Loiza, to stabilize the food supply by growing more food locally in Puerto Rico, and to ensure that critical forests, karst regions, and beaches are protected from unbridled commercial development that often violates local laws.
Our actors will engage you as the serious (but sometimes comical) story unfolds. We will entertain you with authentic live Puerto Rican music, dance, and kokobalé (stick fighting). We might even spark a desire to visit or return to the island to see how you can help preserve the magic of the Isla del Encanto.
